
According to California Fish and Game spokesman Mark Lucero a man was wounded and a bear killed in an altercation near Alleghany.
The man, Orville Sanders, 83 was with a hunting party which treed the bear. The bear was shot and injured, but not killed. It came out of the tree and attacked Mr. Sanders, crushing his wrist.
Other members of the party then accosted the bear, who left Mr. Sanders and turned on another hunter, who shot the bear. The bear is said to weigh about 140 lbs.
Mr. Sanders was transported to Roseville for surgery, and is reported to be doing well and is in good sprits.
