Dear Jerusha,

Yesterday I was walking near Sierraville and I noticed there were not many other people walking along the road. I was surprised because it is so beautiful in the Sierra Valley and you would think more people would be out walking.

Marilyn Knutson

Calpine

Dear Marilyn,

The Sierra Valley is a beautiful place and I think the lack of walkers along the road might be because there are so many trails all over Sierra County to walk on. Also it has been cold and icy and people may worry about walking on ice and slipping and falling. There is less chance of that on a trail. Of course on a trail you could run into rattlesnakes or mountain lion. Well, you really don’t have to worry about rattlesnakes this time of year. And you could run into rattlesnakes on the road actually. But you could run into a mountain lion if it is early morning or at dusk or darktime. Better take a dog with you. Or if you don’t have a dog someone who doesn’t run as fast as you. Anyhow enjoy your walks; you realize of course you didn’t really ask me any question.

Sincerely, Jerusha

Dear Jerusha,

Some people really liked Valentine’s Day and others made disparaging remarks. Do you like Valentine’s Day? Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t.

Do you like St. Patrick’s Day? I think that is the next holiday.

Sincerely,

James Jelson

Goodyears Bar

Dear JJ,

I was going to call you Jim, but then JJ seemed so much more appropriate as your letter seemed to be very personal and I found it so interesting. You didn’t mention that you were giving or receiving any Valentines so I assume you are most likely single. Did you know that I am single? Liking a holiday often involves if there is someone to share it with. Are you Irish? St Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday. I am not Irish, but that won’t be a problem will it? Thank you for writing; I am looking forward to hearing from you again.

Sincerely, Jerusha

Dear Jerusha,

Why is everything that we experience, think or feel connected with something going on in our heads? Why must our awareness be connected to our bodies? Why can't we be disembodied conscious spirits observing our world without being connected to a body? I know that you are a smart person and nobody else can answer my question. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

 R. E. Sperry

Sierra City

Dear Ralph,

I’m assuming your name is Ralph, as you did not give me a clue other than your question, which is irritating. Why would you ask me a question like that? How would I know? My body’s not dead yet. You’ll find out when your body no longer works. Most of my consciousness has nothing to do with my body anyway.

Sincerely, Jerusha

Dear Jerusha,

During the last week the mornings have been so cold I didn't want to get out of bed. How do you keep warm when it is so cold?

Ned Nickles

Sierra City

Dear Ned,

Turn the heat up.

Sincerely, Jerusha

Dear Jerusha,

A friend of mine doesn’t want to say “under God” when the Pledge of Allegiance is said during our meeting. Do you think that is disrespectful? I know someone else who made a disparaging comment about the flag just being a piece of cloth and then my sister got really angry about it. Why do so many people have to argue about stuff like this?

Betsy Caster

Pike City

Dear Betsy,

Well, I have a theory about that. First we live in America and we have free speech so we are able to say what we think out loud. The flag is actually just a symbol for the things we Americans cherish. When someone is saying the pledge of allegiance although they say “to the flag of the United States of America” they are actually pledging alliance to the country not to the piece of cloth, yes the cloth can seem to be important but even if the flag totally disappeared, the idea of allegiance to the values of our country would never die as long as our values reflect the ideology of a government of, by and for the people and our freedoms to think and speak and to practice or not practice a religion of our choice remain in the forefront and we the people don’t forget everyone has the right to these freedoms.

Sincerely, Jerusha

Dear Jerusha,

We heard that it is going to snow this weekend. Is it true? We have been very worried about the weather and the snow. Without snow, the snowmobilers have no place to snowmobile and that is concerning to me as when Ralph goes snowmobiling I get to shop or watch television or maybe go to a movie. When Ralph is home he never wants to do any of those things. He is getting older and not going to be able to continue going snowmobiling much longer so I really hope he gets to this year. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely, Irma Limbeck, Sierra City

Dear Irma,

This certainly is an odd question to ask me. You would probably get a much more informational answer from the weather channel on your TV or even just watching the news which often covers the weather too. I see you live in Sierra City where there is a chance of snow if it snows. I certainly hope it snows, as we need snow for the water content in the summer. My dog likes to frolic in the snow too. Probably Ralph’s love of snowmobiling is akin to my dog loving the snow. So let’s all hope it snows.

Sincerely, Jerusha

Dear Jerusha,

Sometimes your columns are very short and other times they are very wordy. Does it matter whether it is a male or female writer. I think you may write longer responses to men. Why is that?

Sincerely, Elaine Wilkersen, Verdi

Dear Elaine,

I don’t know.

Sincerely, Jerusha

Dear Jerusha,

Well, here we are in the year 2012. I am surprised that we have been around for so long and still seem to not have found the answers to so many things. You would think after 2000 years we would have discovered many things that we still haven’t. For instance on my television I can record programs and play them later, or if I miss something in a program I am watching I can just quickly rewind to see what I didn’t understand. This has caused a problem because when I am in my car and listening to NPR if I get interrupted or don’t quite hear something accurately I reach for the knob to replay or rewind and of course there is no such amenity on my car radio. Why hasn’t someone figured out how to do this? It would make so much sense, and with all the other things we can do with media, why can’t we hit rewind on the radio. It would probably be easy for an inventor to do this. Do you know any?

Sincerely,

Margaret Withers, Sierra City

Dear Margaret,

You know, this is so strange as I have been having the same problem. I agree it should be a simple thing to do and why haven’t they developed this technology. I ask my son when I need help with the computer or television setup so I certainly don’t have a lot of ideas as to how to accomplish this goal. It may be possible someone who has the skills will fix this problem so we won’t miss programs we are listening too. Going into the grocery store means missing an important part of an interview. People often wonder why my dog and me are just sitting in the car staring out the window. Well we are listening to NPR.

Sincerely, Jerusha
