FISHER FIRE BENEFIT

On Friday, July 23 at 3 p.m. the first signs of trouble were flames and smoke at the Fisher residence on Pearl St. The town siren was set off as it was immediately apparent homes on Pearl St and possibly the whole town was in jeopardy. Every able body rushed to the scene. The Downieville Volunteer Fire Department, led by Fire Chief Lee Brown put everyone to work and immediately called for outside resources, including the USFS, helicopter water drops and all local mutual aid fire departments, to the scene as it was apparent the fire was out of control and rapidly spreading up the hillside.

The fire was beaten down and no other loss of homes occurred. There were cases of heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation but no serious injuries. The response of the town to the incident was admirable but not unusual in Sierra County where petty squabbles and diverse beliefs are put aside during an emergency. The loss of one structure is tragic but then the town comes together again to help victims put their lives back together.

A Community Benefit Dinner and Raffle for Steve Fisher will be held on Friday August 6 at the Downieville Community Hall.  The dinner and raffle will begin at 5 pm. BBQ Tri Tip Sandwich, Salad, Dessert and Drinks will be served. Dinner tickets will be available at the Downieville Day Spa or call Darcy White at 289-2752 to donate raffle prizes.  Donations can also be made at the Steve Fisher Benefit account at Wells Fargo Bank in Downieville.
