It only took two educators, six US Forest Crew members, and and four firefighters and firefighter cadets to judge the posters made by students from Downieville Elementary School and come up with seven winners. The winners are:

Kindergarten- Conner White
Second Grade- Sierra Folsom
Second Grade- Margo Lang
Fourth Grade- Kayson Hall
Fourth Grade- Rosendo Maequez
Fifth Grade- Megan Parker
Sixth Grade- Tommy Dines

The posters are to remind all who travel Highway 49 on the west side of Sierra County to be fire safe. The United States Forest Service, Downieville Fire Department and the teachers of Downieville Elementary School cooperated in this yearly effort. The winners had their creations sized to fit the ply wood boards that are now on view between Indian Valley and Bassets Station on Highway 49. One sign is on the Gold Lakes Road to remind campers to be safe with campfires. All the elementary students formed into teams to paint the seven signs. Two hours of painting and the job was completed with the local CalTrans crew placing the signs in strategic spots on the Highway.
