There will be a community meeting in Sierra City to discuss a hazardous fuel reduction project. If you live in the area, you should be there.
Fire season approaches and many residents know the Canyon would become a chimney in a wildfire. The terrain could easily cause its own winds, turning the cool, lovely canyon we know into a blow torch.
That isn't sensationalism, and it isn't fear mongering, it's a clear statement of fact: we love the woods, but they've become dangerous, and we have to act as a community to do something.
Where: Sierra City Townhall
When: Friday, July 3, 2009
Time: 2:00 PM
Purpose: to create a plan under which the community would work with the Sierra County Fire Safe and Watershed Council and to some degree, the Forest Service, to reduce hazard fuels and increase the likelihood of survival for people, their homes and businesses, and for the forest.
Hazard fuel reduction doesn't only increase the survivability of a forest fire, but it also decreases the chances that a house or yard fire will burn the whole canyon.
Get your neighbors on board now! Take a walk through your neighborhood and look at the fuel levels, identify vulnerable areas.
Consider the impact you have on your neighbors; accumulated woody debris and overgrowth can be a source of embers which will endanger your neighbors even if they've maintained their property.
Absentee and seasonal property owners: you can take part by email.
